Talking is free, but not harmless

According to some pacifist opinions, almost any problem can be solved with dialogue and negotiation. More generally, some leftist ideologies are based on two axioms: first, my ideas are undisputable dogmas, because I belong to proletariat, the addressee of the supreme grace that inspired Karl Marx, and other philosophers; second, given that I’m for sure right, positive facts should be mere consequences of the communication of my ideas, and consents can only come automatically. Any problem? There are two problems: thoughts are not facts; the most immediate source of communication is talking, that chiefly depends on thoughts, and not on facts. Well, from popular, traditional wisdom, you might learn that talk is free, and often cheap. Differently, silence is normally golden, although sometimes it can be deadly. However, in my opinion, talk can be even worse than cheap. So, the page is about dangerous kinds of talk, partly with dangers previously unknown or unconscious, and partly with conscious risks.

According to a pair of dozens of web sites, there are two kinds of talking not voluntarily dangerous: self-talk, and excessive talking to others. Self-talk is defined as a toxic inner voice, that makes critical, negative, and punishing comments. The indirect effect of self-talk is an excess of negativity, that can limit your ability to believe in yourself, and can paralyze your will to make positive changes in your own life. When the level of negativity is rather high, mental problems, stress, reduced success, limited thinking, perfectionism, depression, and relationship challenges might follow. Excessive talking to others kills good ideas before they’re executed, and creativity. When excessive talking is bound to mental problems, chronic diseases might follow, even serious. In summary, excesses are always dangerous, even in case they’re related to mere talks.

Normally, talk is talk, not directly associated to violent behaviors, or occasional violent actions. Despite, as any other form of communication, verbal or not-verbal, talk is not always neuter, and has a potential in the matter of psychological, and of physical violence. With other words, talk might be offensive, so that it might create a mental status prone to violence, and, definitely, might lead to violence. Differently from the excesses of the above, offensive talk has not a quantitative aspect. In peculiar circumstances, even a single word might lead to violence.

It’s time for a conclusion. Talk is free, but potentially harmful, when associated to disrespect. In case you’re not respecting yourself, or the others, talk is surely harmful. For that, intellectual arrogance, typical of political correctness, is always negative, because offensive. In effect, my values are mine, given that no supreme light has descended on me, and there can’t be any valid reason in the world to force you to agree. To the other side, various billion wrongs don’t make a right, that’s the fate of mankind. Understandingly, the mini-mix of the page is dedicated to an excess of the Talk Talk, the popular band of synth-pop from the UK.
