Minimalism, for fighting against cultural arrogance

Often, intellectuals are arrogant, especially when belonging to political correctness. For instance, Italian intellectuals are accusing the majority of common persons, those who don’t vote for leftist parties, of being culturally poor, because ignorant about the best doctrines and academic studies. Consequently, according to a well-known leftist politician, those who appreciate conservative parties have a low level of schooling. Well, I’m only a web DJ, and not an excellent personality, approved by our highly respected politicians, and put by them at the top of a cultural institution, so that I can’t start any public debate. However, my humble, irrelevant opinion is that the wisest man all over the world is the one who consciously recognize the scarce validity of his own knowledge, like the ancient philosopher Socrates did.

The page is about some developments of minimalism in music, a cultural movement born in the USA around the second half of the 1960’s, that has been heavily criticized by leftist intellectuals. The criticism is vaguely similar to the one described above, and destined to Italian voters of right-wing parties. In summary, they say that minimalism implies passivity towards the consumerism bound to capitalism, and openness to Nazi mystique. I let my readers freely search for the abundant material on the topic of minimalism, present on the web. I only offer brief observations, hoping of being useful to my readers. Minimalism is an attempt of coming back to primordial simplicity, as a way of gaining back the authenticity of the essence of human nature, and the truth of basic emotions. The attempt ends up to valorize repetitions, and their fundamental role in every kind of civilization. In effect, social life is always based on interpersonal respect, that requires to abandon violent conflicts, caused by envy and hate, and to accept inevitable inequalities, even when ethically unjustifiable. The consequent, peaceful behaviors are necessarily repetitive. In case I decide to kill capitalists, because of the bad exploitation of the labor of proletarians, what kind of progress have I started? By one side, I have originated a non-religious faith, according to which proletarians are best. To the other side, I have authorized one or more criminals, true or potential, to pronounce sermons from a pulpit, adorned with red flags. Be warned, social envy might oblige you to fund bloody terrorists, and to organize harmful riots, based on collective protests of any kind. About that, the mentality of the average executives of a Neo-Communist party is the following: I create painful chaos as a weapon for blackmailing voters, by making them understand that there’s only one way of coming back to social peace, and it’s giving political powers to me. Otherwise, minimalism originates from a noble kind of wisdom, according to which everyone is a common human, whose natural limitations are not culpable. Arrogance seems to be the true guilt, I decide that I am better than you, so that I am always right, and you are always wrong.

Minimalism has inspired various subgenres of dance music, and the most popular is the so called minimal techno. Honestly, I appreciate a different kind of minimalism, less minimal, and more focused on repetitions. It’s the disco/house dub. Many sites affirm that dub music is a subgenre of Jamaican reggae. I admit some resemblances, but I’m talking about something very different from reggae, an evolution of psychedelic rock of the 60’s, whose earliest example is the revolutionary track “time has come today” by the Chambers Brothers (US 1967). The disco/house dub is entirely based on echoing sounds, and their hypnotic power. Why is it so fascinating? Because it gives strength to the most pleasant illusion, the possibility of managing time. Despite, sadly, the entire universe is a slave of time, while time escapes, never stops, and never comes back. The mix of the page is a nostalgic recall to some popular house music hits, renewed by the means of heavy dub. Yes, I have skeletons in my musical closet.
