Magic is a sector of human culture incredibly large, and I let my interested readers to freely deepen the topic. I think I can start my humble contribution by unifying the object of magic, as it results from various definitions of the term. The object of magic is a perceivable change of something or someone, depending on unknown energies, and not relatable to the codified laws of nature. Some authors affirm that magic is a sort of elder of religion, more ancient than the earliest religions, others say that magic is the opposite of religion, because it doesn’t need transcendent entities, such as gods. Many authors talk about natural and supernatural forces, and, honestly, I find illogical the word “supernatural”. For me, nothing exists out of nature, intended as the universe we live in. Rather than “natural and supernatural forces”, I prefer a classification of forces in two groups, energies partly known, and unknown energies. Are there energies that humans know entirely? In my opinion, the answer is no, there aren’t. The problem is that human thought has precise limitations, so that complex realities can easily escape from the acutest analysis. Many persons, including a number of scientists and intellectuals, believe that computers, due to the so called “artificial intelligence”, can help the man in overcoming his limitations. My conviction is different. I think that Mother Nature has created everything for a long-term survival, by not giving to creatures faculties enough to destroy the entire creation. Consequently, everything made by the man has the same limitations of the man himself.
The two most interesting definitions of magic are the one by Aleister Crowley, practically equal to that followed by Satanists, and the one by Sigmund Freud. The British occultist professed that magic is the art of causing changes in conformity with will, while the father of psychology noticed that magic is a peculiar misunderstanding, that provokes a replacement of natural laws with psychological laws. Why are the two definitions the two faces of the same coin? By one side, arrogant ignorance is the factor that associates changes to the strength of will. To the other side, illusion is the name of the connection between changes and mental faculties. Naturally, I like more the definition by Freud, even if the word misunderstanding doesn’t include unaware ignorance, an ubiquitous element never forgettable.
In conclusion, mankind has the tendency of forgetting natural, inevitable ignorance, also by masking it under a curtain made of false knowledge. Of course, magic belongs to false knowledge. Coming to music, as easily imaginable, the mix of the page is entirely about magic, that can be a pleasant illusion.
