“Story within a story” is a literary device, with which a protagonist of a story becomes the narrator of a second story, in order to explain an inner meaning of the main narration, often symbolic or psychological. An early example of that is contained in the Bible. The device has been notably developed in the plays of William Shakespeare, and is fundamental in the classic novel for children “The Neverending Story” by Michael Ende. “The Neverending Story” contains the epic battle between a young, unaware terrestrial, who has stolen a magical book, and the incoming Nothing, that wants to destroy the parallel world of Fantasia. Atreyu, a hero of Fantasia, asks the help of the unaware terrestrial, the only one who can beat the Nothing. The Nothing symbolizes the destruction of humanism by the means of apathy, depression, disillusionment, cynicism, and loss of ethical values. Of course, this is not a blog about literature, and the literary device of the above has been chosen as the topic of a page, the one you’re reading, because of a discussable application of it to politics. In effect, since the year 1998, “Atreju”, an Italianization of the character invented by Michael Ende, has become the official name of a juvenile, annual meeting of the Italian right-wing. The purpose of the organizers is offering to young generations the traditional values of political right, as a barrier against philosophical and ethical kinds of nihilism. Well, the exploitation of Michael Ende’s work has never been authorized, neither by the author himself, nor by his heirs. Moreover, the former agent of the author has publicly declared that the traditional values of the political right are opposite to the ones followed by Mr. Ende. For now, the described criticisms have not been the object of a judicial opposition, and have not given way to a legal inhibition of the same, unauthorized exploitation.
At this point, I can propose my observations. First, I don’t appreciate political values of the autonomous species, supported by intellectuals, or ideological systems, because I think that the unique, valid source of political choices should be the electorate. How? Through democratic mechanisms of representation of interests, chiefly based on consensus and multilateral communication, preferably continuous, and constant. With other words, I can’t believe in collective values of the political kind, able to transcend the supreme value of intangible individual rights, proper of each individual. In my perspective, political mediation serves for obtaining a coordinated compatibility of the cited rights, without any exorbitant power. I refuse the idea of peculiar rights, belonging to organizations, or to group of persons, when not subordinated, or merely functional, to individual rights. For me, the political Nothing, that someone like Atreju should ask to combat, is made of political castes, social classes, and any kind of bureaucratic elitism, including certain attempts of education of the masses. Second, I appreciate patriotism when it’s a mere tool for protecting, or developing, individual rights, especially with an economic content. Third, my favorite Atreju warrior is a humble servant, with contained ambitions, and guided by altruism, who never forgets his role, and never falls into the temptation of taking advantage of his social position. Fourth, I consider totally immoral the situation of current public spending in Italy. In effect, there are the following objective data (updated at December 31, 2024): political professionals are 1 million, and public servants are 3,7 million, total 4,7 million, equal to the 7,9 % of the total population of Italy (about 59 million); well, the 7,9% of the population is absorbing the 45,5 % of the entire GDP, approximately equal to 2200 billion euro, because the current public spending in Italy is about 1000 billion euro.
I don’t know how much Atreju is inspiring the premier of Italy, Mrs. Giorgia Meloni, who has even received an award intitled to Margaret Thatcher. Despite, Mrs. Meloni is doing nothing to moralize the described current public spending, while Mrs. Thatcher was one of the best premiers in doing that. I hope that Mrs. Meloni would like to deserve the award of the above, in the forthcoming years.
