After having created your own problems, you can’t always reach out for a solution

Sigmund Freud was a great man, especially due to his intellectual rectitude. Like the ancient philosopher Socrates, Dr. Freud came to the conclusion of the imperfection of the brain, and added a scientific analysis to the previous, genial intuition. From antiquity to now, advances in human knowledge have been numerous, and notable. Today, we know two fundamental, factual truths: everything in the universe is far from perfection; natural processes are extremely complex, and lack of what we use to call rationality (human thought has precise limitations). Even if we can’t know how many kinds of life are present in the universe, we have learned from the completion of the sequence of DNA that life is extremely rare and, for that, precious, because the formation of it appears as the unforeseeable result of an incredible number of inexplicable events. In effect, given that we have observed the basic mechanism of cosmic interactions, we can deduce that the probabilities of producing new, and different life are exceptionally low. Back to Dr. Freud, he demonstrated the importance of internal conflicts between conscious and unconscious, and the relevance of emotional taboos, and of childish repression of sexuality. The described conquers are the pilasters of a new branch of science, named psychoanalysis, whose purpose is psychotherapy. Nevertheless, Freudian theories have shown their limitations, describable as excessive simplification of mental activities, and overvaluation of sexual impulses. In reality, as resulting from an equilibrate observation of human behaviors, sexuality is statistically a minor part of human life, and humans can maintain common and socially acceptable behaviors even in case of complete, lifetime chastity. Possibly, psychoanalysis, like any other branch of science, can’t gift mankind with solid certainties, and subsequent, unwinnable powers. About that, the unique, undisputable, universal rule is continual, unstoppable change, together with a cage named duration, according to which nothing is eternal and everything is going to have an end. Perhaps, the efforts, made by Dr. Freud in forming his theories, caused him to forget the starting point, and the reason of his greatness, the understanding of the imperfection of each human brain, including the one of Dr. Freud himself.

Innumerable times, humans have testified, or felt, a need of individuals for mental rescue. Unluckily, mental rescue requires a collaboration of the interested person, who can be helped exclusively when wants to be helped. More than that, the effectiveness of psychotherapy depends on a participation, and a sort of sharing, in order to obtain a consensus, and a conviction of the utility of the offered help. As you can imagine, in case of severe mental disorders, or true mental pathologies, the cooperation of the patient is very hard to get, or, sometimes, precluded. When are you ready to beneficial psychotherapy? I propose a simple answer, that avoids any technical terminology. Psychotherapy is good to you in case you’re conscious that you yourself have created your own problems, and that you can’t reach out for an autonomous solution. When is psychotherapy well-done? Curiously, when the therapist does the same thing done by Mr. Freud, a, more or less conscious, follow-up of the philosophy of Socrates. The focal point is that your knowledge is truly effective only when it comes out from yourself. The method is named Socratic questioning.

In conclusion, you can fruitfully help others only in case you’re humble, respectful, and fully aware of your own limitations. The mix of the page is dedicated to psychotherapy.
