It’s true that a large part of culture is not indispensable for surviving, but personal motivations are an immaterial strength, always strictly bound to cultural data, and notably influencing the quality of life. An ancient poet said that human beings have not been made for a brutal existence of mere ferociousness, because the purpose of a well-lived life is a continual acquisition of virtue and knowledge, through learning and experience. For millennia, nobleness has been a collective attribution of a desirable social status, depending on a series of elements, among which style is fundamental. For instance, a king should behave according to an etiquette, should wear differently from other people, including a crown, should hold symbolic and precious objects at hands, and so on. Today, a large part of mankind believes in a different kind of nobleness, not depending on a social status, but on recognized qualities, moral, psychological, and/or behavioral. A pair of examples: certain benefactors are popular for a noble spirit, depending on disinterested generosity; a professional DJ is defined “king of DJs” for popularity, influence on other DJs, and on the music industry. However, in both the examples, style is still fundamental, as the main source of the virtual nobleness. Well, given that I’ve found various definition of the concept of style, not always satisfactory, I’ve thought to write the page you’re reading, for communicating my ideas in the matter of the cited concept. The main reason is that, nowadays, styles have acquired a great importance, in many sectors of culture, and in many human activities. Thus, as I hope, even a small contribution, like mine, might be useful.
First, I can’t appreciate the definitions of the notion of style based on originality. In effect, original things might not meet a collective appreciation, while a style is stylish especially for the reputation of being pleasant and subject to popularity. Moreover, generally, original things catch the eyes for being uncommon and proper of individuals, while a style has always a positive connotation of openness to different contributions. Second, you should not confound a peculiar style with an autographical firm, or a sort of commercial brand. In effect, repeatability and accessibility are fundamental elements of style. Third, style should always be something imitable, and subject to many utilizations, modifications, developments, adaptations, and so on. Going to a first conclusion, you can search for your style between peculiar ways of doing things, and distinctive traits of personality, by using the illumination of communicability. As an example of method, you might answer to the following questions: is there something that I’m doing fine, that others can truly appreciate; have I had an idea for simplifying the lives of some persons; is there something of me that I can valorize with an offer to others; what makes me an elegant person, and someone to be copied; and so on.
As usual, I exploit my ideas about the topic of the page in the field of music. This time, I’ve chosen to employ drum ‘n’ bass not only as a distinct musical genre, but especially as a rhythmic style lent to other musical genres. It’s a praxis largely applied in light music, and commonly named “fusion”. It means that the mix of the page contains tracks, that have been remixed with a drum ‘n’ bass groove line, whose authors consider themselves jazzmen, hip-hop artists, players of Brazilian music, pop music players, and so on. Of course, when you apply the style of drum ‘n’ bass to a song of a different genre, you obtain something notably trippy, and suitable to the blog.
File name “drum ’n’ bass contagion, by Max Look DJ (June 2025)”, 1 hour and 21’ of fusion tracks on a drum ’n’ bass base, at the average rhythm of 175 BPM.
