Pets have conquered a large part of the internet, and generate a notable traffic. Honestly, a traffic superior to the one generated by important, or serious, topics. Generally, I can observe that the internet is not exactly what its developers have initially wanted; in brief, a powerful tool for cultures, technology, jobs, and businesses. Into the internet, some other unforeseen rooms have been created. One of those rooms is dedicated to non-professional entertainment, inclusive of fun, humor, hobbies, blogging, and social networks. The field of funny pets is notably dimensioned, and is chiefly fueled by blogging and social networks. I’ve know, and I refer it briefly, that the origin of the amusement of enjoying peculiar pictures of pets, containing a humorous text, dates back to the early 1870’s, and was invented by the photographer Harry Pointer, who named the pictures “souvenir cards”. The praxis has been renewed on the internet, by transforming the souvenirs cards into their virtual equivalent, the so-called “Usenet jokes”, initially in the early 90’s, when the web was, more or less, something reserved to nerds. However, the true internet sensation dedicated to pets has been the development of LOLcats, where LOL means “laughing out loud”. The development has had two initial steps: in the year 2005, the earliest “Caturday”, a virtual day dedicated to LOLcats; in the year 2007, the first meme named “I can has cheezburger?”, that has established the connection between the humorous content of memes and a highly incorrect kind of grammar, that has become the main distinctive trait of LOLcats. The popularity of LOLcats has reached its peek thanks to the Grumpy Cat (2012-2019), a strange, female feline whose facial expression was a sort of unhappy emoticon. A list of other successful LOLcats: ceiling cat, basement cat, Schrodinger’s cat, a number of cats resembling to Adolf Hitler, the serious cat, the cat editing your articles on Wikipedia, the cat corrupting your files, the cat fixing your computer that doesn’t need to be fixed, and Colonel Meow.
Well, as you can verify, the golden age of LOLcats is ended. It means that LOLcats have lost a lot of traffic on the web. They say that today web users prefer dynamic animal videos, whose humorous side comes from pet behaviors, and various trends, typical of social networks. I have also noticed that, sadly but obviously, on the web pets are innumerable times exploited, for increasing the popularity of their owners. Strangely, animalists are not strongly criticizing the kind of explotation of pets, perhaps because pets are, consciously or not, considered mere properties of their owners. Back to the funny videos of pets, I sincerely can’t appreciate the immotivate and undeserved mocking of weak, undefended living beings. In my opinion, while dynamic animal videos can’t gain the support of ancient wisdom, LOLcats memes have a notable resemblance to the moral fables of Phaedrus. Consequently, the conclusion is that I would appreciate a return to success of LOLcats memes. Coming to music, logically the mix of the page is entirely dedicated to cats, including LOLcats.
